Hemp has made its way into the mainstream of consciousness in recent years, thanks to its legalization in 2018. With the passage of the Farm Bill, retailers are now able to sell hemp and CBD products like smokeables, vapes, and edibles containing less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – the psychoactive compound found in marijuana. Unlike regular marijuana however, hemp products don’t induce an intoxicating high.

What to Look for in Hemp Products

When browsing for a “healthier” hemp, there are a few things to look out for: 

  • Consider production methods. Is your favorite brand committed to all-organic processes? If they’ve produced hemp in accordance with USDA regulations, their product may be classified as organic, meaning it’s been grown without the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.
  • Are you OK with small amounts of THC? Think about whether you want to consume the psychoactive ingredient, THC. Some hemp is produced without any of the compound present, often referred to as “isolate”, while other strains contain up to .3%, the most that’s legally allowed, often referred to as “full-spectrum.” It should be noted that the amount of THC present in full-spectrum CBD products is not enough to produce a high.
  • Shop from a trusted source. Check the manufacturer’s website to see if they have lab tests to validate the purity and dosage of CBD in their products. Read the labels on the product.
